Limerick secures €6.5m in EU funding to become a smart positive energy city
9th July 2018
Limerick has received a considerable grant from the Horizon 2020 project which is part of the EU’s largest Research and Innovation funding scheme. This grant will help fund Limerick City’s transition to becoming a “Lighthouse Smart City”. These “Lighthouse Smart Cities” are used as ‘testing grounds’ for new and innovative solutions to reduce energy consumption and increasing general energy efficiency.
Limerick is the first and only Irish city to be a recipient grant. The city will work in partnership with five other European cities over the next five years. Citizen engagement will be a significant component of the “Lighthouse Smart City” development plan. This engagement will be used to create demonstrative projects detailing how to become a ‘Smart’ city.
